Radioactive Heaven and Earth is the first global analysis of the health and environmental effects of nuclear weapons testing, both atmospheric and underground, since testing began at Alamogordo, New Mexico in 1945. This is a formal report from the International Commission of Physicians and Environmentalists to Investigate the Health and Environmental Consequences of Nuclear Weapons Production. A project of the International Physicians for the Prevention of Nuclear War (IPPNW), the recipient of the 1985 Nobel Peace Prize. The team of authors carefully assesses and meticulously documents all aspects of health and environmental issues related to nuclear testing, taking care to provide technical analyses of data including margins of error, methodologies for study and accounting for discrepancies compared to previous estimates. After firmly establishing the basis for determining the validity of their findings, they proceed with in-depth assessments of the effects of nuclear testing, breaking out specific results of: U.S. Testing in North America; U.S. Testing in the Pacific; Soviet Union Testing; British Testing in Australia; British and U.S. testing at Christmas Island; French Testing; Testing in China, India and other countries. Conclusions: Although arrival at final figures was exceedingly difficult, resulting in sizable margins of error, conservative estimates of deaths caused by worldwide nuclear testing amount to between 2, 400, 000-61, 600, 000 deaths worldwide. The variance of an order of magnitude is due to cumulative margins of error and standard deviation. Again, these figures are conservative.
