It is not terribly often played in comparison with other large Rachmaninov piano works, but composers should never have the last word about their own music, and here, the sonata finds perhaps its ideal interpreter in Steven Osborne. There are certainly other players who can pour on more passion in Rachmaninov, but that is not what is called for here. Instead, Osborne unravels the dense lines of the outer movements and brings convincing logic to the whole. He does not lack expressivity, as one can hear in the slow movement with its hint of The Beatles' Yesterday, but he exerts extraordinary control over the entire work. The sonata opens the program, and the rest is no letdown; there are some rare short works, including a strikingly dissonant and posthumously published Prelude in D minor and a piano version of the Nunc dimittis from the All-Night...
