Although prolifically active on European labels such as Arte Nova, Gall, Verdi, and Amplitude in the 1990s and early 2000s, in 2004 the group decided to cast its hat into the ring through marketing recordings through its website by way of its own Foghorn Classics imprint. This particular recording was made in 1995, not in the studio, mind you, but with high-end equipment in a private home. The acoustic has a nice, open sound about it; you can hear the resonance of the room but there is no wet "reverb" as such, so the recording remains dry but spacious, a nearly ideal situation for chamber music. Foghorn Classics' Quintessence features the Brahms Clarinet Quintet in B minor, Op. 115, a venerable standard so beloved of Benny Goodman that it is said the work was open on his stand as he died while practicing in 1986, and Mozart's "Stadler Quintet," K. 581.
