Why would they not be persuaded? What was this parable intended to teach? The Teacher will explain the manners and customs and ideas of the Jews alluded to in the parables;--he will also speak of the hatred of the Jews towards the publicans, their office as tax-gatherers, and the covetousness of the Pharisees; then show how these things suggested the parables of Jesus by which he taught that those most despised might enter the kingdom of heaven before the Pharisees, although not the descendants or children of Abraham. In regard to the parable of the rich man and Lazarus, the teacher will explain the figure by which heaven is represented as a feast, and the position of the beggar as leaning on Abraham's bosom, --the gulf as signifying the separation of the good and bad, &c. The Teacher may speak of humility and repentance, --of the kindness of Jesus to the humble and despised, --of the dangers of covetousness, --of the character of the rich man, to show that freedom from gross vices, amiable and natural affections, do not make a person a Christian, --of the live brethren, to show how worldly habits prevent the reception of and obedience to the truth, --of God as a Father ready to receive the returning prodigal, --and of the beauty and fitness of the parables of ...
