Judith Tarr has a knack for writing fantasy novels. This one however is not her best. The story describes the lives, customs, and rituals of Amazons. An interesting and mysterious subject, somehow Tarr's plot falls short of the wonder and majesty one would suspect of the Amazons. However the character of Alexander the great revives the tale and one can't help to marvel at how a man such as Alexander could conquer nations and inspire love at the same time. Instead of being a story of Amazons, this is truly a story of Alexander the Great and the philosophies of war and spirituality. As with Tarr's novel Bringing Down the Sun, she has a talent for describing the lives of Alexander the Great and the and the civilization of Macedonians. Tales of the Amazons, at least to this reader, leaves much to be desired.
