Though the period in which these mature works were written was relatively short, there is a good deal of variety between the three. None of this music is performed or recorded often, likely owing more to the subject matter than the music Purcell provided (Robert King and his King's Consort included all three on the Complete Odes and Welcome Songs album). The earliest work, Fly, bold rebellion, Z. 324, was written after a plot to kill King Charles II was uncovered. Protestant members of the English nobility, unhappy with the relationship Charles had with Catholicism, planned to assassinate the monarch at the Rye House in 1683.
