At the same time we may readily admit that the four gustatory qualities are more akin to one another than are the other four. Thus arises the suggestion and the problem that the sensory qualities occur only in forms which differ from one another by a distinct step. The solution of this problem must be the preliminary to any problem as to the nature of the difference between qualities.
