When D-Day arrives, the GIs suddenly depart and all returns to comparative normality. But the war has left its casualties and the village is grieving for its losses. A few months later, Tom is wounded and discharged. Kerry is secretly relieved that he will no longer have to fight, but her joy soon turns to dismay when she realises how bitter he has become; the war has changed him. When Tom finds out about Kerry's friendship with Marvin, he accuses her of betrayal which she vehemently denies. Matters come to a head when Claire excitedly tells Kerry that a dozen of the GIs are to return to their base, including Claire's sweetheart - and Marvin.
