The orchestra has received high marks for performances of this music in which it perhaps punched a bit above its weight. The situation continues here, with a dry, pristine Symphony No. 1 in D major, Op. 25 ("Classical"), Prokofiev's apotheosis of a neoclassicism that would run for 30 more years without really exceeding this high-water mark. Litton drills the strings and gets clean lines in the first movement's second subject and the barely-slow Larghetto second movement, and the whole performance has a bracing quality. The anti-chronological organization of Litton's set is due to the fact that the Symphony No. 2 in D minor, Op. 40, and Symphony No. 3 in C minor Op. 44, are perhaps the outliers in the cycle of seven; critics of the Symphony No. 2 included Prokofiev himself, who remarked, "When I listen to it myself, I do not fathom its essence, so what...
