Prokofiev's Visions fugitives, Op. 22, live up to their name; they are arguably the greatest set of miniatures in the concert repertory since Beethoven's Bagatelles. They resemble those Beethoven works somewhat, not least in that they are susceptible to a wide variety of interpretations. Pianist Nicholas Angelich offers a distinctive reading here, diverging at some points from the composer's dynamic markings but crafting an evocative, intelligent take on each of the 20 little pieces with a good deal of rhythmic freedom. ...
