They resemble those Beethoven works somewhat, not least in that they are susceptible to a wide variety of interpretations. Pianist Nicholas Angelich offers a distinctive reading here, diverging at some points from the composer's dynamic markings but crafting an evocative, intelligent take on each of the 20 little pieces with a good deal of rhythmic freedom. Angelich applies rhythmic freedom to the Piano Sonata No. 8 in B flat major, Op. 84, as well, with an extremely deliberate opening Andante dolce movement several minutes slower than many others on the market, and his approach is perhaps less successful here. This is one of Prokofiev's three so-called "War Sonatas," and he seems to aim for a tragic mood, but it is hard to detect a consistent trajectory.
