This edited book is concerned with the further development and application of the real options paradigm that has brought a revolution to corporate strategy and project evaluation. The first part of the book, focusing on the valuation and exercise of corporate real options, is concerned with situations in which future project cash flows are (at least partially) controllable by management. Specifically, part I of the book deals with the determination of optimal contingent policies and the value of flexibility, particularly different aspects of the timing of project commitment. Part II deals with agency issues, contracts, and incentives in a real options context, particularly with the agency problems that arise in a dynamic setting when cash flows are controllable and the decision maker has private information about the underlying variables. Part III deals with the determination of optimal policies and the valuation of flexibility in natural and environmental resource investments. The last part, on strategic options and product market competition, is concerned about the reactions of outside parties and situations where strategic interactions between agents are important. This results in game-theoretic or industry equilibrium valuation models. The book contributes to a better understanding of the effects of flexibility, the role of agency problems, and the importance of strategic considerations in the analysis of investment projects and strategic decisions.
