It takes money to start manufactories, the absence of which is one of the great and crying necessities of all the Southern States. That the Southern people will have more money at the end of this crop than they ever had before is a self-evident proposition. Economy, it really seems, has at last taken hold of our people--economy of such a sort as New Englanders know nothing of; because, a-a matter of fact, a severe economy is not practiced so long as our people can get credit, but when they cannot get credit, and have no money, they, of course, are economical. As an incident which indicates the economy with which this crop has been raised, I may say that I am interested in a little cotton mill in our city. We do not manufacture the finer articles. Throughout the South cotton manufacturing is principally confined to the production of rope, twine, bagging and other coarser articles. Last year the demand on the factory for cotton rope was far beyond its capacity to supply. This rope, I should say, is principally used for plough lines. I believe up here you never use anything but leather for a line, but down there ropes are almost of universal use. Now, the point to which I wish to direct attention is, that this year the people have used grape vines for plough lines instead of ropes; they have used hickory bark instead of ropes, and the fact is that there has not been this year one-twenty-fifth part of the rope for plough lines bought in Arkansas that there was last year, while there is being more cotton raised than there was last year.
