They sweep across, in front of him, while he, standing still in his position, raises the ball aloft as though to forward pass it. This causes the defense to hesitate perceptibly in its charge and holds the secondary men back, whereas they should be coming up fast to tackle. L pulls the ball back down almost instantly, tucks it under his arm, falls in rapidly behind his interference and smashes in. The play is being widely copied. Pass-out plays to the short side have been tried in large numbers, but as a rule they do not work out well: defensive half backs watch such stunts mighty closely these days. The reader will find some forward passing plays outlined in the chapter on Forward Passing. About Trick Flays. So many coaches of minor teams write me asking for "a good trick play or two." Now, a really good trick play is a deucedly handy thing to have in one's grab bag, but the downright truth of it is that trick plays that will really work in this day and age are almost as scarce as "hen's teeth," and quite as hard to pull. This was not always the case. In the early days of the game before offensive tactics had broadened out the way they now nave, and before coaches had put in a life-time of study on ways and means to stop a varied offense, most any simple kind of trick--anything new--would no only work but work well.
