"Princess Sophie and the Six Swans" is a new book for children ages four and up that tells an old, archaic folktale from the Brothers Grimm in modern dress. The book is published by Wisdom Tales Press, which publishes spiritually-themed "stories from around the world" for children. Wisdom Tales kindly sent me a review copy. Artist Kim Jacobs both retold the story and prepared the illustrations. Jacobs has illustrated many children's books over her thirty year career.
This story explores the primal theme of relations between children and a stepparent, told in Princess Sophie's own words. When Princess Sophie's beloved mother dies, her father, the king, remarries a mysterious woman. Princess Sophie tries to turn her father against his new wife who responds sharply by turning Sophie's six brothers into swans. Sophie must make six shirts from thorny thistles while not speaking a word before she completes her task.
Sophie works for years on her task in the company of the six swans while managing to win the love of a young king. She silently perseveres and she and the king marry and have a child. The wicked stepmother steals the child away. The six swans return when Sophie is put on trial for witchcraft with the shirts virtually complete. The swans are (mostly) transformed back to young men, the baby is returned, and the curse broken. "I discovered what determination and love can do", Princess Sophie concludes.
As with most folktales, this story is deceptively simple and will bear discussion from young people and their readers. The illustrations are beautiful and evocative. Kirkus Reviews praised this new book highly, with the reviewer noting:
"Jacobs-an illustrator writing for the first time-has a masterful eye for colors and skillfully employs them to reflect the mood of a scene and drive the narrative. The dreamlike quality of the illustrations makes this version an ideal bedtime story; misty blues symbolize Sophie's loneliness and isolation as she sews her brothers' shirts, while the delicate swirl of rainbow color renders the brothers' transformations especially magical. A charming adaptation with a solid moral and a heroine whom little girls and boys can look up to."
This little book will remind readers of the mystery and magic at the heart of things. It has themes of jealousy, loyalty, and giving people a chance in addition to the values of love, faithfulness, and perseverance. It is movingly told and illustrated in Kim Jacobs' adaptation and will delight children, parents, and teachers.
