Therefore, if it seems to you that He is far from you, and that your soul is void of those movements of grace His presence creates, ask yourself if you and your tepidity and reserve towards Him are not the cause. Affections and Resolutions. Point II. The Disciples constrain our Lord to remain with them. Consideration. The disciples--whose hearts had burned within them on the way, during the discourse of the unknown pilgrim who had joined them--entreated Him not to leave them on their arrival at their destination. From entreaty they proceeded to argument: "Stay with us," they said, " because it is towards evening, and the day is now far spent;" adding action to word, "they constrained Him," as the gospel expresses it. "And He went in with them." Application. The practical conclusion we may draw is this: that, if we wish to own our spiritual insensibility, and to draw our Lord and His sensible graces into our souls, we must use a sort of holy violence towards Him; redoubling, at certain particular seasons, our devout practices and mortifications, till, like the disciples, we constrain Him to yield to our desires. Like them, we may urge "that it is now towards evening;" and " that the day (of our life) is now far spent," and tending, perhaps without our suspecting it, towards its decline. Affections and Resolutions. Point III. Jesus yields to their entreaties. Consideration. The entreaties of the disciples, and the gentle violence they used towards Him, pleased their Divine Lord.
