Excerpt from Practical Blacksmithing, Vol. 4: A Collection of Articles Contributed at Different Times by Skilled Workmen to the Columns of "the Blacksmith and Wheelwright" And Covering Nearly the Whole Range of Blacksmithing From the Simplest Job of Work to Some of the Most Complex Forgings Vol. I. Of this series was devoted to a consideration of the early history of blacksmithing, together with shop plans and improved methods of constructing chimneys and forges. Vol. II. Was, for the most part, given up to a con sideration of tools, a great variety of which were de scribed and illustrated. In Vol. III. The subject of tools is continued in the first and second chapters, after which the volume is de voted chie y to a description of a great variety of jobs of work. In the present volume we have continued the very interesting topic of jobs of work, and have devoted considerable space to the subjects of cutting, bending, welding and setting of tires, setting axles, resetting old springs, making hob sleds, the tempering of tools; bolts, nuts, the working and welding of steel, etc. The last chapter is wholly given up to the compilation of a set of tables giving the sizes and weights of iron and steel.
