This book is a must-have for all owners of the Shopsmith 10E and 10ER multipurpose woodworking machines that were manufactured and sold by Magna Engineering Corporation from 1947 through 1953.
This first edition of PTWFE (as it often referred to by Shopsmith owners) was published in 1953 by McGraw-Hill, and it is the only edition that features the Shopsmith models 10E and 10ER. By some estimates more than 125,000 Shopsmith machines were sold from 1947-1953, and this first edition of PTWFE went through at least eight printings to satisfy the need to educate and inform these American handymen and handywomen.
Magna introduced the Shopsmith Mark V machine in 1953 as the successor to the 10E/10ER machine, and later editions of this book feature versions of the Mark V. If you are fortunate to own a 10E/10ER, you should try to get this first edition. The 1955 edition is useful as well, although the photographs all show the Mark V machine.
The 1953 edition has nine chapters that instruct the reader in the five basic functions of the Shopsmith machine?table saw, sanding disk, horizontal drill, vertical drill, and lathe?plus the accessory tools that were available as options on the the machine. The chapter titles are TABLE SAW, JOINTER, DRILL PRESS, LATHE, JIG SAW, BAND SAW, ABRASIVE MACHINES, SHAPER, and HOW TO SHARPEN TOOLS.
The text is easy to read and the black & white photographs and line illustrations are superb. The book is an excellent tutorial for the neophyte sawdust maker (like me) and a handy reference for the skilled woodworker.
