Potatoes are Cheaper" is the funniest book this reading teacher has ever read! This book has the same humor us "oldsters" remember from "The Many Love of Dobie Gillis" television show of the late 1950s and early 1960s. Only the book is much more "risque" than the show could ever be in those days. This depression era tale takes place in the St. Paul MN area with a laughable cast of characters. Morris is the single 20 year-old Jewish protaganist who has a goal of finding a rich ulgy Jewish girl to marry. Then he can take care of his bizarre family that includes a plain sister, a crabby mother and an out-of-work father. There are of couse aunts, uncles and cousins who appear thoughout the story; each one is funnier and crazier than the last one! The problem is Morris is in love with a catholic girl named Briget. Read how Morris, his mother, Bridget , and the nuns that raised her deal with this problem in "Potaoes are Cheaper."
