In "The Bank at Gila City," when the town promotes a stock subscription to found a bank, two men are excluded as undesirables - but that was before the new bank was robbed, and they need one of them to recover the stolen funds. In "Jerico Takes the Rough String," Jerico Jones has his horse string stolen and local law enforcement follows the trail left by Jerico's horses, whereas Jerico heads in the opposite direction: the way from which the thieves came. Jerico is not at all sure how much help Deputy Sheriff Lance Touhy is going to be, either in finding the murderer or preventing Sturgis from taking over the Macklin Ranch. In "Nine Coffins for Bellaire," Jerico Jones is injured in a train wreck in which he loses the string of horses he was shipping. The railroad is more than willing to reimburse Jerico for his loss, but the amount of the requisition is for twice the sum of his claim. Bennett Foster knew the terrain and the people of the West first-hand from a lifetime of living there.
