Leicht and Fitzgerald provide an intriguing thesis: the days of feudalism and peasantry are on their way back. Through big businesses' greed, government's lackadaisical approach to problems and individual Americans' seemingly apathetic take on critical issues (unless you're on the very bottom of the socioeconomic food chain), we are, the authors argue, headed back to the days where the very few own, operate and control everything while the rest of us peasants toil for what pittance they are willing to give us. Well-written and supported by strong quantitative data, this book would be a great read for anyone who believes that America is a meritocracy. This book would also be a great text for any class dealing with contemporary social problems such as stratification and poverty.
