This was the pinnacle of a terror-based criminal justice system. After late eighteenth century, the potential of expanding the usage of post-execution punishments and notably public dissection was still being advocated widely. However, in the late eighteenth century, critics of the death penalty have emphasized on the requirement of substituting it with non-capital alternatives such as transportation, solitary confinement, or life imprisonment with hard labor.
