Louis Auchincloss was a prolific writer. Oddly, his books break into either excellent or deadly. "Portrait in Brownstone" is a rare mix of both. The opening sequences are wonderful, but about midway through the book, sharp observation breaks down to cursory explanation. Don't be surprised if your interest starts to flag as well drawn characters become cliches and once interesting situations turn predictable. It's a shame, really; this could have been one of the author's best.
