Seller's Description:
Very Good. Presumed first edition thus (no additional printings listed); no date, looks ca 1900-1910. An interesting variation on this popular title. Consists of quarter cloth (spine) and wood veneer covered boards, stamped silver lettering, approximately 3 ½ x 5 ¾ inches, which open to reveal a folder containing 25 separate postcards, each having two sepia drawings based on photographs of scenes from Pompeii, both the then current ruins, and a reconstruction of what they look like in antiquity + a tipped-in (at side edge of rear board) 15 pp booklet describing the scenes. Very good. A bit rubbed along edges, "25" written in ¼ inch numbers on upper corner of rear board, lightly age yellowed, otherwise booklet is tight, clean, paper crisp, unmarked and apparently never read, and the postcards clean and unmarked. Author was a professor and the official artist of the excavations. Unusual! Travel; tourism; ancient ruins; ephemera.
