He was willing to trade information for protection, but the police wouldn't cooperate. Only through Cpl. Mark Murphy's unrelenting efforts did Kirby eventually become an informant for the RCMP, and be instrumental in the arrest and prosecution of Toronto and New York mobsters for extortion, bombings, murder conspiracies, and numerous other crimes. Kirby has been described by RCMP officials and the FBI as one of the best ploice informants ever to surface.
