Poles played significant roles in the history of the American Southwest. As political emigres escaping the oppression of the occupying powers in their native land, they were at center stage of the unfolding drama in the West -- the War with Mexico that thrust America into the desert Southwest, demarcation of the boundary between the United States & Mexico, saga of the old Santa Fe Trail, the Battle of Glorieta Pass, New Mexico, economic & social development of New Mexico Territory, & the defense of the Texas western frontier. Two were pioneer merchants: Louis William Geck of Dona Ana & Alexander Grzelachowski of Puerto de Luna. Known also as Padre Polaco, Grzelachowski insured the Union victory at Glorieta Pass, the decisive Civil War battle in the West. Martin Kozlowski, the former cavalryman, provided the springboard for the battle. The patrician Charles Radziminski soldiered in the War with Mexico, surveyed the U.S.-Mexico boundary, & served with Robert E. Lee in Texas. With the indomitable Santa Fe Trace Battalion, the aristocrat Napoleon Koscialowski advanced across the Great Plains to surpass the heralded march of Doniphan's Missourians.
