One is the somewhat neglected cello-and-piano work that gives the album its name, and the storytelling quality is palpable, with sudden, dramatic shifts of mood and rhythm. Hardly less narrative, though, is the Violin Sonata, which is splendidly arranged for cello and piano by van der Heijden. The little outbursts of the violin version, if anything, seem almost more human in this rendering.
