Everyone knows classic Nightmare on Elm Street. Now take that world, give it more definition, more rules, some color and an actual purpose other than merciless pointless murder. You get wonderful Dream World - shared consciousness of sleeping humans - where a lot of action in this book takes place.
It's a complex world but well-defined rules and diverse characters, each having their own purpose, make that world easily understandable and captivating. As "magical" as The Dream World sounds it does have it's flaws. You have to have an antagonist and this is where the evil force appears - Night Terrors. They are controlled by monstrous creature REM and haunt all troubled and helpless. And that's one of the things I loved the most about the story - horror is not fictional, it's not an improbable zombie apocalypses or some boring vampire attack. Nightmares are very well-known to everyone. How often do you get to experience the antagonist?
But what if there was someone to protect you from that? To guide you through your nightmare? Story gives you exactly that. Dream Walkers. Soldiers who guard the Dream World and help those in need.
Book redefines classic motives of good vs evil. Authors bring that simple idea to an easily understandable plane - dreams. They give a very unique perspective on something we don't really think about much even though we spend an immense amount of time on it - sleeping. And there are some truthful parts to the story - it revolves around the phenomenon of lucid dreaming. It's a rare talent - small percentage of people can recognise that they are in a dream, even smaller number gets to control and manipulate parts of it.
In the book we follow the life of the main character - young lucid dreamer Jonas Anderson. Story presents a beautiful character development through grief and excruciating pain of loss; vulnerability and loneliness and their destructive powers; wishing to escape and seeking salvation in companionship. His character is very relatable and you grow and learn with him.
Story makes you impatient to know what will happen next but it will also make you want to slow down time to savour every moment of it.
Another thing that is worth noticing - supplemental content. Story has an original soundtrack by Angels & Airwaves, comic book series and a short animation film. All those can help with envisioning the world and they give more details to characters and story but they are not obligatory. Everything stands very well on it's own.
In conclusion, this book is definitely worth reading, plus it can be a great help with kids who are afraid of nightmares - why not introduce them to an idea of a Dream Walker, someone who guards their sleep.

Death, Dreams, and a Damn Good Story!
Poet Anderson ...Of Nightmares is the story of a teenage boy who has undergone serious tragedy and must do what it takes to protect the ones he loves. In Poet's universe, the Dream World and Waking World are interconnected realities that both have dire consequences. Poet has the power of Lucid Dreaming, which he learns how to craft throughout the novel in order to overcome his nightmares and become a hero.
This book blends sci-fi, romance, and suspense all into one. You have elements that echo Tron and Star Wars that provide excitement and awesome imagery, while you have a romance that keeps Poet grounded to the Waking World as he navigates the unpredictable (and sometimes hellish) Dream World. The book has you engaged and interested the whole time and leaves you wanting more at the end.
For fans of Tom DeLonge's music who are skeptical--you know that special feeling you get while listening to blink-182 or Angels and Airwaves? You get that same feeling reading this book. The themes that DeLonge has preached throughout his musical career--human consciousness, achieving the impossible, and yes, plenty of profanity--they're all here in the form of a novel. Better yet, the companion AVA EP is on iTunes so you can get the best of both worlds.
I was not aware of Suzanne Young before this book but now I'm a huge fan. The writing style is accessible while remaining engaging throughout. She is best known for her bestselling The Program series that explores dark topics coupled with gripping romance. In Poet Anderson she explores more of these ideas, but this time in relation to dreams and with a lot more action (and glowing motorcycles). Death, destruction, and the treacherous waters of high school romance are all explored beautifully by Young in a way that will captivate a wide demographic of audiences.
Definitely pick up the book if you want a new and engaging YA book. It's the type of story that could easily be seen on the big screen soon.
