No poet embodies more fully the spirit, the charac teristic traits of his nation, than Uhland. However wide his studies in related literatures, his culture is thoroughly Germanic. Certain of his poems are uni versal in their appeal to all hearts. Possibly no Ger man poet, whose writings are of equal extent, has at tracted so many translators. As a poet representing so fully the national spirit, his works are worthy of study. His poems are also of interest as an intro duction to the study of folk-songs and mediaeval German legends. It is impossible to study the poet Uhland, whose life was so occupied with public affairs, without constant references to his personal history.
