Kingsley's most famous works include, 'The Water-Babies', 'Westward Ho! ' and 'Andromeda and other Poems'. In a half-morocco binding. Externally, sound, though with some rubbing and a few marks. Kingsley was a notable social reformer, university professor, historian and novelist. He was a friend and correspondent with Charles Darwin. Charles Kingsley is probably best known for his classic The Water-Babies which illustrates his concern for social reform. The tale retained its popularity well into the twentieth century. He wrote several poems and hymns, including 'The Saint's Tragedy', 'Andromeda' and 'A Thought From the Rhine' all of which are present to this volume. In a half calf binding with paper covered boards. Externally, very smart with some minor rubbing to the head and tail of spine and patches of rubbing to the extremities. This is the second impression of the second edition of the work. The first edition was published in 1871. Written by Church of England priest, Charles Kingsley, who was also a university professor and poet during his life. He is known for his association with social reforms, in particular, working conditions. Kingsley's most famous works include, 'The Water-Babies', 'Westward Ho! ' and 'Andromeda and other Poems', some of which are included in this collection. This particular collection is comprised of the verse-drama entitled 'The Saint's Tragedy' for the first half of the work, followed by a compilation of poetry. The poetry includes 'A Lament' and 'The Outlaw', as well as the more well-known 'Andromeda' and 'The Water Babies'. With a preface by Rev. F. D. Maurice, who was an English Anglican theologian and one of the founders of Christian socialism. With two ink inscriptions to the first blank. The first inscription reads 'Hubert Peake, with the Bishop of St John's thanks. July 1903'. The second of the inscriptions reads 'To Sheila Peake from Dad, September 1954'. In green half morocco binding, with gilt tooling to the spine, with marbled boards and endpapers. Externally, very smart, with rubbing to the extremities and to the joints. Slight loss to the leather to the extremities, particularly to the front right corner. The odd mark to leather. Internally firmly bound.
