In him we fancy we discern a poet who will unite Browning's vigorous power with Tennyson's sweetness and clearness of expression." "Pall Mall Gazette, February 10, 1877. "Mr Dowden's sonnets recall the weighty thoughts and high aspirations which give a character to the sonnets of Wordsworth, sometimes they remind us of the passionate emotion and pathetic tenderness which permeate Mrs Browning's; but these memories afford no proof that Mr Dowden is a plagiarist; they show only that he is more or less influenced, and no doubt influenced unconsciously, by the music of contemporaries. That he could excel if he pleased in imitative verse is proved by a very clever 'study in the manner of Robert Browning, ' called 'In a June Night.' "Mr Dowden's poems, as we have said, are varied in character, and the brief quotations a reviewer can give will convey a very inadequate impression of the volume. Referring the reader to the sonnets entitled 'The Inner Life, ' to the 'New Hymns for Solitude, ' and to a charming poem, too long to quote, about five swallows who have begun life in a cathedral close, we must content ourselves with transcribing a sonnet and four song-like stanzas."
