To the Editor of Public Ledger: The refusal to pardon Pascoe forces the conclusion that the Pennsylvania Board of Pardons should be abolished. In the present condition of your State politics there are not enough trained minds to make such a board either reliable or effective. Take Lieutenant Governor Murphy and apply facts. In 1905 Murphy, according to the papers, characterized the verbiage of his political critics by the phrase: "The powers of the English language have been strained to the utmost." I quote one sentence from the Public Ledger, which, even if " strained," will now be recognized by Mr. Murphy as almost prophetic, in view of the subsequent Capitol disclosures: "It is true that the doors of this building present the brazen imprint of the faces of Quay and Penrose; but, now, poetry can aid politics, and decent men before these doors will vary Dante's description of the gates of hell, and assert: 'Who enters here must leave all honesty behind.'" Lieutenant Governor Murphy's place in history as the presiding officer of the Pennsylvania Senate in its last session would prevent those familiar with the law of intellectual probity from asking of him justice tempered with mercy.
