Warton instances the binding of Furor by Guyon: --"With hundred iron chains he did him bind, Instance of And hundred knots, which did him sore.the susgsefst" iveneis or constrain; rhyme. Yet his great iron teeth he still did grind, And grimly gnash, threatening revenge in vain: His burning eyen, whom bloody streaks did stain, Stared full wide, and threw forth sparks of fire; And more for rank despight, than for great pain, Shakt his long locks coloured like copper wire, And bit his tawny beard to mow his raging ire." But for the tyranny of rhyme, we might have wanted the vivid circum-pictorial stances of the fifth, sixth, and eighth effects, lines. The stanza, in Spenser's hand, is equal to any Rembrandt-effect of shadow, or fear. Never did the armour of a knight glitter more solemnly in the dark, or a red thunderbolt tear up the ground with a fiercer Thecha-plunge, than in his verse. But its thf measurenature 1S gentler and more sunny. ""!ellcacy Its home is on the lips of love, when and grace. i May throws flowers from her lap, or with the dreaming Enchantress, whose warm tresses are sprinkled by ambrosia; "on either hand upswells The gold-fringed pillow lightly prest." Then all the hidden melody of its soul comes forth. Listen to the descrip-tion of the abode of Sleep: --And more to lull him in his lumbers soft, A trickling stream from high rocks tumbling downe, And ever-drizzling rain upon the loft, Mix'd with a murmuring wind much like the sowne Soothing description of Repose.
