Written by one of Britain's foremost journalists, this book combines political analysis and war reporting: it is an epic account of the Lebanon conflict by an author who has personally witnessed the carnage of Beirut for over a decade. Fisk's book recounts the details of a terrible war but it also tells a story of betrayal and illusion, of Western blindness that had led inevitably to political and military catastrophe. Fisk's book gives us a further insight into this troubled part of the world.

There was a saying in classical Greece that asked "When will there be justice in Athens? The reply to which was "There will be justice in Athens when the uninjured are as outraged as the injured"! Fisk's journalism exemplifies this saying. Here is a journalist who is not supine in front of ideological interests. He not only truthfully recounts each side's perspective, he gives voice to those people whose desperate histories would never be known. Pity the Nation has been written by a journalist who has lived intimately with the nation he covers. I would suggest that instead of listening to the drivel that passes for journalism on such channels as Fox News, people who really want to understand the Middle East should read not only this book, but also "the Great War for Civilization". Telling the truth is increasingly rare in this time and this author gives truth its due share even when the truth is unpalatable.
