Even now hens are laying eggs all about the Abbey ruins, and doubtless some of those reverend fathers would not have been afraid of sucking raw eggs. Yet they were not content, for they said they spent their time in singing to the wolves. There is a legend that the House or Priory was founded by a Norman knight who got lost upon the hills when hunting, and like many of his kindred gave what was not his to save his soul. As a penance for sins he owned to, he vowed never to take off his armour. Perhaps it had got rusty and stuck fast. I once knew a man in Didsbury, named Gadd, who told me that when once he put a shirt on " I ne'er takes it off again; it stays theer as long as it howds thegither." Hut I never thought he was a holy man, although as the shirt and he grew together they may have grown holier. Gently down for miles we roll along that rugged Vale of Ewyas, with the dark red hills alongside, gradually receding farther away as we reach a lower level. Cwmvoy is a curious name on a signpost, and a curious sight is a pair of angler's leggings waving in the wind to dry. As the road mounts again beyond the railway, we catch a glimpse of a long avenue of Scotch firs extending in a picturesque way across a large park, and ending in the far distance with a fine old house. Quickly we unlimber the camera, but the near trees and the distant hall, with its background of hills and the conical peak of Skyrrid, or the Holy Mountain, need different exposures, and the light is dim. The name of the place is a long one, perhaps it matches the owner's pedigree--Llanvihangel-Crucarney Court.
