Richard Gere is almost as famous for his Buddhism as he is for his acting, and he has intelligently used his high profile as a platform for speaking out passionately about the tragic situation in Tibet. Gere has been a sincere and devoted practitioner of TIbetan Buddhism for 30 years and is an intimate of The Dalai Lama. His high profile connections allowed him to receive permission to travel in Tibet, and in 1993 he made the journey, accompanied by another of his teachers, Khyongla Rato Rinpoche, who left Tibet following the escalation of Tibetan atrocities in 1959. This was Rinpoche's first visit back to his birthplace, and it was an emotionally charged visit for both, which clearly provided the grist for this book. Gere has shown himself to be a man of many talents, but one that is not generally known is his skill as a photographer. The 64 photographs contained in this book are beautiful, mysterious, and profoundly moving. Reminiscent of the dewy dimness of Victorian photography (epitomized by Edward Steichen's "Flat Iron Building"), these platinum prints on rag paper have a silvery, shimmering quality that is enhanced by Gere's technique. Many of the photos are slightly blurry, out of focus, and hauntingly surreal. Gere has said of these pictures and of his technique that he wanted people not to concentrate so much on the exoticism of the faces, but to see behind the faces to the emotions and inner qualities of his subjects. One photograph of a mother holding her child is so fuzzed out that you immediately understand Gere's goal - what shines through in a luminous, almost supernatural way is the suffering and pain of the subjects. Meditative, hushed, and transcendental, Gere has created the perfect document of the plight of the Tibetan refugees and the horrors of their diaspora. With a foreword by the Dalai Lama.
