From the Phoney War of 1939 to the Battle of Britain in 1940, the pilots of Hornet Squadron learn their lessons the hard way. Hi-jinks are all very well on the ground, but once in a Hurricane's cockpit, the best killers keep their wits close. Newly promoted Commanding Officer Fanny Barton has a job on to whip the Hornets into shape before they face the Luftwaffe's seasoned pilots. And sometimes Fighter Command, with its obsolete tactics and stiff doctrines, is the real menace. As with all Robinson's novels, the raw dialogue, rich black humour and brilliantly rendered, adrenalin-packed dogfights bring the Battle of Britain, and the brave few who fought it, to life.

I heard about this author from a commentator on NPR and boy was he right !!! I could not but the book down and just enjoyed every page. The humor and obsurdity of war are expressed so well and I found myself laughing out loud most of the time. I am looking forward to reading more of this authors offerings but it's hard to find his books. Enjjoy

Top wicket lip, old sport!
Pining for some good books after reading Patrick O'Brian and John Le Carre, I heard Robinson reviewed on NPR. I was reluctant to read "comedy" and "war novel" but gave him a chance an wow, I'm sure glad I did. Robinson's writing is excellent, his characters are deep, and his rhythm of comedy, suspense, tragedy, action and romance is superb. I foresee another O'Brian-like addiction.

Another great Robinson title
Derek Robinsons' PIECE OF CAKE follows the story of Hornet Sqdn. before and during the early days of the Battle of Britain. This book has a weatlh of curious, quirky characters who resolve into very real people with all the hopes, dreams and fears of young men of that era.
Full of great battle scenes and dark humour, PIECE OF CAKE, will delight those who love a fully engaged story of World War II.
