Those for whom the names Philby, Burgess, and McLean denote something other than a law firm or a rock group, will find this a must book. Le Carré fans will certainly appreciate it.
Of course, it is "out of date," but that is the main part of its value: rather quaint, indeed, for example, are the encomiums bestowed upon one Anthony Blunt (or Blount - whichever you prefer). Le Carré's rather scathing introduction is, alone, nearly worth the price of the book.
A lot of other spy novelists have caught up with and exposed the genuine chaos and idiocy of the time in question. This book is a confirmation or justification of that sort of "revisionism."
Could any of this happen in America? It did!
Is it happening now? Aaaah! Good question - and don't place any bets.
