Phantom Lady is Cornell Woolrich at his best: a wrong man thriller compounded with a ticking clock (his execution) as well as shadowy femme fatales. In this new edition, Barry N. Malzberg, who was Woolrich's agent in the 1960s, and one of perhaps only two literary figures still living that knew Woolrich, provides a fascinating account of the man.

Cornell Woolrich, a contemporary of Chandler and Hammett, is also a brilliant innovator whose mysteries set in wartime New York City keep you hanging. This is one of his best. A man and wife quarrel, he leaves their apartment with their two theater tickets, asks a stranger in a bar if she wants to join him. She accepts and they agree not to exchange names or personal info. When he comes home that night, he finds his wife brutally murdered and cops arrest him. His only alibi is the stranger but where is she? In Woolrich's tight narration, the man is tried and set for execution. An old friend tries to find the Phantom Lady while the days tick off.
That's the basis for the suspenseful plot but Woolrich was so much more than a brilliant plotter. His books were made into famous films, like "Rear Window," "The Bride Wore Black," but the books are better.
My copy a lovely, clean 1942 edition in those small-sized paperbacks they used to make that fit so neatly in the hand.
