Scholar and keyboardist Siegbert Rampe is recording the composer's complete keyboard works for MDG, played on the organ, harpsichord, and clavichord. On this CD, he groups the pieces according to instrumentation, with two sets devoted to the organ and one each to the other instruments. Philips' music is intensely and densely contrapuntal, but its outstanding characteristic is its outrageous level of ornamentation; hardly a beat goes by that isn't decorated with some variety of Baroque ornament or run. On the micro-level, it's intriguingly complex, but taken in large doses, its effect is so relentlessly and frenetically animated that it can become wearying.
