I've dabbled in gardening here and there. I get excited when I start, but it's easy to get overwhelmed. Most gardening books are very technical, which is great, when you need information. I've gotta say though ... this fun, motivating take on teaching gardening was a pleasant surprise and an awesome change of pace!
It has all the information you'd need to start a garden, and you'll have fun while you're learning. For me, information sticks better that way (when I'm having fun), so it was right up my alley!
I am so excited to start my garden, *and* to keep going. And to fail, and learn, and laugh, and try again, and do better next time! All thanks to Josie Beckham.

A Handy Entrepreneur HandBook
ââ?¬Å"Permaculture Gardening for the Absolute Beginnerââ?¬Â? by Josie Beckham defines permaculture as ââ?¬Å"humans and nature working together in harmony.ââ?¬Â? I love this definition. I had no idea what it meant prior to reading this wonderful resource. The self-sustaining aspects of permaculture gardening are very attractive. Instead of fighting against nature to grow food, we can work with it and benefit greatly without tearing up our ecosystem. The thought of being able to grow healthy, organic food on my own is incredibly appealing.
This book is divided into five well-organized parts. Beckham takes you into developing a permaculture mindset by providing a wealth of information and explaining twelve permaculture principles. This will help readers see that permaculture gardening is for them. The next parts take us into the different methods and materials that will be involved. After that information is gained then the reader can follow the next steps to getting started with planting. There is so much helpful information provided in these areas. In the last part, Beckham discusses other things that can factor in such as insects, wildlife, and animals.
Eager to learn, I read the book from beginning to end. I plan on referring back to it as needed. I believe that most readers will want to do this. People who are more experienced gardeners should still find much of the information valuable. The appendix offers concise information that will be easy to access as a resource. The references section has a variety of interesting links that readers will not want to skip. I appreciate that this book is written in a friendly, engaging manner. I really enjoyed reading this. Beckham has a lot of enthusiasm for permaculture gardening, and she makes this a fun topic!
My retirement plans involve relocating to the Bay Area of Virginia with my siblings. We hope to grow most of our own food. I am starting to research aspects of gardening now so that I will be ready when the time comes. I was attracted to the title of this book because it mentioned ââ?¬Å"gardeningââ?¬Â? and ââ?¬Å"beginner.ââ?¬Â? I figured it was for me! I must admit I did not know what ââ?¬Å"permacultureââ?¬Â? meant. I quickly learned the definition and was happy to know that this book is even more in line with my goals than I originally thought. I am ready to get started now!

A fantastically motivating, highly informative read for growing plentiful, healthy gardens and plants.
Beckham has written a step-by-step guide to help beginner gardeners, filled with encouragement, humor, and anecdotal stories that make it highly entertaining and fun to learn! The book teaches us about preparing and improving our soil, how to make the most of whatever space we may have, making and using compost, pest prevention and management, and helpful ways to deal with any problem that may arise! If you are just starting out with your garden, as I am, this book contains all the information you will need to have a thriving, successful garden!

This is a masterpiece, combining chapters with step-by-step methods and advice on implementing home gardening techniques in any and all available locations, while also providing vision and mission statements based on the core principles of permaculture, adapted to include both personal and community benefits, as well as encouraging the entrepreneur and innovator in all of us. The practical is well outlined, and the needed details are abundant. The author's humor bridges insight and information in a compelling style.

Exciting & Empowering!
I have never had a garden before, although both my parents were avid gardeners. We always had plenty extra to share with neighbors and lots of healthy veggies for the family. So, as an adult, I have wanted to live that healthy lifestyle again, but the basic row-by-row garden plan has been daunting for me. Way too much work with the busy life I live.
BUT I AM EXCITED NOW that I have this CLEARLY WRITTEN and WELL-ORGANIZED book. Gardening is doable now that I have a guidebook. I am on the road to a healthier life!
