Performance criticism attempts to capture the event for which the texts were created. Bernhard Oestreich's work is the first German monograph on this new method of biblical interpretation and actually the first performance criticism of the Pauline epistles. In the first chapter, the author begins by dealing with the roots of this approach to the text. He then defines performance and explains the method. In the following three chapters he tests this method, using the Pauline epistles and other early Christian epistles. In doing so, he shows how the speaker acts towards the recipients through these texts and provokes interaction among the audience. The Pauline epistles come to life as social events, their intentions become clearer and the understanding of them is enhanced. German description: Die biblischen Texte stammen aus einer Kultur, in der die Schrift in der Regel dem gesprochenen Wort diente. Das Geschriebene wurde vor Zuhorern vorgetragen und entfaltete seine Wirkung in einem gemeinschaftlich erlebten Ereignis. Dabei waren uber den semantischen Gehalt des Dargebotenen hinaus auch die Elemente mundlicher Kommunikation von Bedeutung, die in der Schrift nicht erfasst werden konnen und trotzdem ihre Spuren hinterlassen haben, zum Beispiel Tonfall, Blickrichtung, Gestik, die Korperlichkeit der Beteiligten und ihre Interaktion. Performanzkritik, ein neuer methodischer Zugang zu den biblischen Texten, nimmt diese Spuren auf und sucht das Ereignis zu erfassen, fur das der Text gestaltet wurde und zu dem er beigetragen hat. Bernhard Oestreichs Werk ist die erste Monographie in deutscher Sprache uber diese neue Methode der Bibelinterpretation und die erste zur Performanzkritik der Paulusbriefe uberhaupt. Im ersten Kapitel behandelt er zunachst die Wurzeln der Performanzkritik. Sie ist aus der rhetorischen Exegese und der Mundlichkeitsforschung erwachsen und nimmt Anregungen aus Theaterwissenschaft und Performanzkunst auf. Danach definiert er Performanz und stellt darauf aufbauend die Methode vor. In den folgenden drei Kapiteln wendet er diese Methode auf die Paulusbriefe und andere fruhchristliche Briefe an. Dabei wird erkennbar, dass diese Texte so gestaltet sind, dass der Vortragende durch sie an den Empfangern handelt und Interaktion im Publikum provoziert. Die Paulusbriefe werden als soziale Ereignisse lebendig, ihre Intentionen werden deutlicher erkennbar und das Verstandnis schwieriger Passagen wird erleichtert.
