Pearl Buck weaves the story of a Chinese handmaiden's love for the only son of the Jewish family she serves, with the matriarch's struggle to hold onto her commmunity's religious traditions amid the steady assimilation of outsiders by the Chinese through mixed marriages. Lovely historical details show the royal family, the tradesmen, the servants' lives and the rigid culture that governed China and their guests.
