U.S. reviewers have raved about the young singer, generating a good deal of advance buzz, and his voice has been developing consistently. His is not a glass-shattering voice, but his virtues lie elsewhere; in tunes, especially quiet ones, he leaves the listener entranced. He seems to have a special flair for the French repertory, which depends heavily on these. In the big high notes as well, the French language somehow seems to give his voice freer rein. In the Rigoletto excerpts, the biggest hits here, he is adequate but unspectacular, but this brings to mind the other virtue here; Pati does not do the usual debut album filled with operatic favorites. On both the Italian side (Verdi's La battaglia di Legnano, Rossini's Moïse et Pharaon and Guillaume Tell, the latter two of which are French operas) and the French (Gounod's Polyeucte, Benjamin Godard's Jocelyn of 1888) he picks items that range...
