Excerpt from Paul-Louis Courier: A Selection From the Works When my friend Professor Kastner asked me to con tribute a volume to the series of which he is the general editor, I somewhat rashly offered to prepare a selection from the works of paul-louis Courier, whose Lettres ???crite: de France at d'italie have been my favourite Iifun dc chewt for some thirty years. In the course of the last eighteen months I have realized more and more that the task of editing a hitherto unedited author,1 especially one whose text is such a mosaic of allusions as Courier's, should only be undertaken by those who have retained the confidence of youth.
