Although his work was heard largely within the French concert scene, Juon was of Russian extraction and studied at the Moscow Conservatory under Taneyev and Arensky. Born in 1872, his classmates included Nikolay Medtner and he might have rubbed shoulders with his slightly younger contemporary Sergey Rachmaninov, who took a similar course plan with the same teachers.
