The 41 Pieces for two violins of Paul Hindemith played here are receiving their first complete performance on CD. This is odd in that Bartók's 44 Duos for two violins, which are fairly common, were written for the same project, a 1920s German Geigen-Schulwerk (violin method) whose editors wanted to reflect contemporary compositional trends and commissioned pieces from several composers. Hindemith worked especially closely with them (more closely than Bartók did), and he reported writing several of these duos over dinner with them one night. Hindemith's duos, some of them scarcely over ten seconds long, are worth the revival. They're as characteristic of their composer's style as are the Bartók duos, with simple classical structures given intricately worked-out twists that seem to define a complete harmonic system for each little piece.
