I read this in 1988, just after finishing 'Red Storm Rising,' and was hooked. Much better than the movie, and I didn't know it came before 'The Hunt for Red October.' The book explains a lot more of Ryan's background and the crash that happened and his relationship with Admiral Greer. If you haven't read any other Clancy novel, read this because after 4 or 5 books, they all become the same, so read one of the best first.
