CHAPTER IV. BODILY HEALING. During the progress of the revival the most amazing cases of the cure of bodily disease began to appear. Blumhardt's personal faith was strong in the promises of God. He believed that the Word only ceases to operate through lack of faith. Speaking of this, he writes: "It was especially in that awful case of illness (Katarina Dittus) that I dicovered how the testamentary words of our Lord Jesus Christ--"They shall lay hands on the sick and they shall recover"--are not yet quite out of power, if applied with an humble, penitent, and believing heart. Everything concerning illness in my parish began to be changed. Seldom did a medical man appear in it; the people would rather pray. Certain diseases, especially amongst new-born children, seemed entirely to cease, and the general state of health became better than it was before." FIRST CASE OF HEALING. In 1844 a man came to Blumhardt for religious instruction, who suffered intensely from rheumatism. The disease returned regularly every four weeks; but at times he was suddenly attacked during the period of rest, and would instantly fall to the ground helpless. When the pastor laid hands on him, in the Lutheran form of absolution, he suddenly felt a sensation as if something was passing downward through his legs and out of his body, and the disease was gone. He said nothing about it at the time, but awaited with anxiety the regular period of return; but he was never affected again.
