The spirit of Wolfram von Eschenbach's original epic is masterfully told by Robert Janecke and Paul H. Curts in this edition. Appearing first by Janecke in "Marholds Jugendb???cher," it was later edited by Curts at Wesleyan University, Middletown, Connecticut. D. C. Heath and Company Boston printed the same German version of the story in 1948. This is a translation. The adaptation of the poem by French poet Chr???tien de Troyes gave rise to Wolfram's Parzival in the 13th century, Middle Ages. Parzival is the "blending of legends from two cycles of sagas," writes Curts, "the mystical and spiritual ones of the Holy Grail and the more worldly tales of chivalry which glorify King Arthur and his Round Table." For the West, the legend of Parzival is at once important and significant. In it, we recognize a call to a great awakening-where religious symbolism is not lost; and mythical tales are not forgotten. The main character, Parzival, here strives for the honor to become a knight. His heroism gives to us a sense that Parzival becomes one not only by following a knightly code but also by the resolution of deep agony that leads him onward towards his goal. Parzival is chosen by God, not only to find the Grail but also to serve it and to seek it. He begins his quest a boy in search of adventure. He becomes a man with humility, the quality he will most need to fulfill his destiny. The Holy Grail is the cup Jesus Christ drank out of during the last supper with His disciples. In Parzival, the Grail is also the crowning of an ultimate reward. The requisite journey to find it is for him, long and difficult. Yet, except for the Cross, no symbol for the Christian can excite one more in faith than the Holy Grail. In response to it, we too yearn to rise to the occasion of a quest. Janecke and Curts do more than justice to an extraordinary tale. And "If this text conveys to the reader some idea of the greatness of Wolfram's original epic," writes Curts, "it has served its purpose."
